British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," he said. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
